Three Highlights of my Polar Expedition to Svalbard

Three Highlights of My Polar Expedition to Svalbard

My first-ever polar expedition was to Svalbard in June 2025 and it will not be my last! The archipelago of Svalbard belongs to Norway and sits approximately halfway to the North Pole. I started my adventure in Helsinki, Finland for a few days of Nordic culture before taking a charter flight to Longyearbyen, Norway to embark on an 10 day journey in and around Svalbard on the Ocean Explorer.

I was excited about the unknown but had no idea how enamoured I would be with the peacefulness and beauty of the Arctic! The journey was filled with breathtaking wildlife encounters and unforgettable experiences. From the moment I set foot on the ship, I was captivated by the sheer beauty and diversity of the Arctic landscape and its wildlife. The wildlife sightings were incredible; from polar bears to seals to Arctic Foxes and puffins. It was amazing to see these animals in the wild.

1. First Polar Bear Sighting

The first polar bear sighting was an exhilarating moment for everyone on board. On the evening of the third day, a polar bear was spotted resting on the ice. The excitement was palpable as the expedition crew shared their knowledge and provided closer looks through telescopes and binoculars. I spent a significant amount of time on the top viewing deck, soaking in the excitement and the beauty of the moment.

Later, I discovered a small balcony area protected from the wind, which offered an even closer view of the bear. The ship’s photographer, Steve, joined me to capture the moment. The entire expedition crew was actively engaged, sharing their expertise and interacting with the guests. This encounter was not just a highlight but a profound experience that brought everyone closer to the majesty of these magnificent creatures.

2. Paddling in the Arctic

One of the most memorable activities during my expedition was the paddling experience. I signed up for a one-time paddling session, which turned out to be an incredible opportunity to get up close to the pack ice and witness its various formations. The zodiac driver and kayaking guides were exceptional, ensuring that even first-time paddlers felt safe and comfortable.

The equipment was high-quality and easy to use, and the guides provided thorough instructions on everything from entering the kayaks to paddling techniques. For about an hour, I and my fellow paddlers followed our guide’s lead, taking in the tranquility and the sound of small waves lapping against the ice. The weather was perfect with sunshine and calm seas, making the experience even more enjoyable. It was a day that I will never forget.

3. The Polar Dip

Jumping into freezing cold water might not be everyone’s idea of fun, but for me, it was a must-do experience. The polar dip was a highlight of my trip, with participants ranging from teens to those in their 70s. The air temperature was a chilly 5 degrees Celsius, and the water was a mere 1 degree Celsius. The staff made the event incredibly fun and memorable, with music, dancing, and even costumes to keep everyone’s spirits high.

The polar dip was organized like a well-oiled machine, with staff ensuring that guests moved through the experience quickly to minimize exposure to the cold. From someone waiting to take your robe to someone ready with a towel, every detail was thought of. And, of course, a celebratory shot of vodka was waiting at the end to warm up the participants from the inside. I couldn’t resist heading to the sauna afterwards to truly warm up and reflect on this unforgettable experience.

Bonus: Wildlife Encounters

My expedition was filled with incredible wildlife sightings. I saw several types of seals, puffins, Brunnich’s Guillemots, Arctic songbirds, walrus, Svalbard reindeer, beluga whales, and minke whales. One of my favorite sightings was the walrus haul out at Eolusneset, particularly watching walrus come in from the ocean to the beach. Another personal favorite was observing a molting Arctic fox trot happily across the tundra, with one of the walking groups getting an up-close view.

The beluga whales were a sight to behold, with their white backs popping out of the water in unison. I also enjoyed watching puffins perched on rocks, floating in the ocean, and flying with their characteristic front-heavy awkwardness before splash-landing. The polar bear sightings were, of course, a major highlight. The first sighting was of a collared polar bear resting on the ice, and a few days later, I had the incredible opportunity to see a mama and baby polar bear on an ice sheet. These encounters were made even more special by the dedicated expedition crew who were always on hand to help spot and observe the wildlife.

The Urgency of Arctic Travel

Throughout the journey, the expedition staff taught us all about how climate change is affecting these animals, their homes and food supply. The more I learned from each of the expert staff while on their zodiac, walking the tundra or in their informational talks on board, the more I felt incredibly fortunate to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Seeing these animals in the wild; learning about their behaviours and habitats was really enlightening for me. It highlighted the urgent need to combat climate change, as the Arctic is extra vulnerable to the effects. Sustainable tourism plays a crucial role in protecting these fragile ecosystems, ensuring that future generations can also experience the wonders of the Arctic. By supporting responsible travel practices, we can help preserve the homes of polar bears, walruses, Svalbard reindeer and other incredible animals.

Arctic destinations are becoming increasingly popular as more people seek to explore off-the-beaten-path locations and witness the beauty of the polar regions. However, there is also a growing sense of urgency to see iconic species like polar bears before they disappear due to climate change. The Arctic is warming at a rate more than twice as fast as the global average, threatening the habitats and survival of these magnificent creatures. By traveling to these remote regions, we not only create unforgettable memories but also support conservation efforts and raise awareness about the importance of protecting these fragile ecosystems.
